Learning to Cook by Making Strawberry JamLearning to Cook

Jessica and her friend Katie making strawberry freezer jam a few weeks ago. I cook with Jessica (and whatever friends might be around) all the time. It gets her interested in food and cooking, is laying the foundation for her being able to cook for herself one day, develops a sense of pride in what she’s accomplished, and challenges her to follow a logical sequence, use her math skills, and experience science through chemical reactions in a real-life application.

Other than cooking the pectin on the stove (which I did) these girls (ages 4 and 5) made the jam on their own – measuring, mashing, mixing, and putting it into jam jars. Jessica also helped me to pick the strawberries, learning hands-on where her food comes from. If they can do it, so can you!
